Vol. 11 No. 1-2 (2026): Advancing Urological Excellence in a New Era

PREFACE

Advancing Urological Excellence in a New Era:

It is with great pride and a sense of profound responsibility that I welcome you to the first issue (Volume 11 issue 1) of 2026 of the Nigerian Journal of Urology (NJU). As we step into 2026, the landscape of urological practice in Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region continues to evolve, marked by an inspiring blend of academic rigor and clinical innovation.

This issue arrives at a pivotal moment. We are witnessing a significant expansion in specialized urological infrastructure across the country, evidenced by the commissioning and successful operations of several dedicated urology centers with Robotic Systems. These milestones are not merely architectural achievements; they represent a commitment to improving patient outcomes through centralized, high-quality care and specialized training.

The contents of this issue reflect the diverse and complex challenges we face in our daily practice. From the perennial battle against urological malignancies to the complexities of reconstructive surgery and endourology, the research presented here underscores our collective drive for excellence. A recurring theme in this volume is the concept of "frugal innovation." In our resource-limited environment, the ability to adapt global standards to local realities is not just a skill but a necessity. The papers featured in this issue highlight how Nigerian urologists are leveraging implementation science to bridge the gap between high-tech advancements and practical, accessible clinical care.

Furthermore, as the official publication of the Association of Urological Surgeons, Nigeria (NAUS), the NJU remains committed to the advancement of medical education. The integration of robust clinical research into the curriculum for the next generation of urologists is essential for the sustainability of our specialty. We continue to encourage submissions that explore medical education and residency training frameworks tailored to our unique socio-economic context.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the authors for choosing this journal as the home for their intellectual contributions. My thanks also go to our dedicated peer reviewers, whose meticulous evaluations ensure the scientific integrity of our publication, and to the editorial board for their unwavering support.

As we look forward to the remainder of 2026, I invite all fellows, residents, and researchers to continue sharing their findings. It is through this exchange of knowledge that we will continue to elevate the standard of urological care in Nigeria and beyond.

I trust you will find this issue both informative and professionally enriching.
